New York City: a city filled with 8 million hearts that beat for 8 million different reasons while having one thing in common: LOVE. The four letter word that we all know the meaning to. It’s one of the first words we hear when we are born and yet we all experience in completely different ways. If you really think about it our lives revolve around this word: movies are made about it, songs are written about it and poets have spent their entire lives writing verses about it. Scientists claim that love changes our brain chemistry, the levels of dopamine and norepinephrine rise and that’s why falling in love feels like an addiction. It has the power to unite us and break us at the same time, but what does it really mean to you?

That’s what we wanted to find out, so we went around asking New Yorkers of any age, ethnicity and gender what does love mean to them and their answers were nothing short from perfect:

Female, 27, Single:

Love to me doesn’t have just one definition. Love is expressed in different ways. There is a mother’s love , a friend’s love , a significant other’s love, a love for something, a place or a memory. To love is to care, share, value , and trust. Love to me is the most intense feeling to express.

Female,19 , Single:

Love to me is doing something for someone without expecting anything in return.

To us, it means freedom of the heart to blossom. It's rainy Sunday mornings and late night love notes. It's the unconditional support from the people around you. It's understanding that we can't make someone responsible for our happiness because that's no ones job but ours. It's letting people be who they are without trying to change them.

Love is many things. We all have it inside of us; we are all capable of feeling it. Love is complex and simple all at the same time, love is just love and there’s no right or wrong way to experience it or describe it. In a city full of millions of different people, love still unites us all.
