A List to Survive Fall When it's Not Your Favorite Season

I have a strong emotional connection with every season. The changes that come with each often represent the emotional changes happening within. Contrary to most people I’m not as excited for fall as everyone is. This may possibly have something to do with the fact that things are coming full circle for me. Last fall, I experienced a heartbreak and the leaves falling remind me of that loss. Just because it isn’t my favorite season doesn’t mean it isn’t a beautiful one, there is magic in its transition. That’s exactly what I’ve decided to do, focus on the beauty of it all. I’m going to enjoy the aspects of fall that do make me smile. I’m going to find the pleasures of this season that bring me joy. I’m going to let myself feel all the feels and I will make new memories in between. It’s okay to not love something and still find ways to enjoy parts of it.

To help you (and myself) get through this season I made a list of 5 things that bring me joy/help me feel this human experience a little deeper:

Bethel & Co Fall candle:

Why a candle? Because smells have the ability to create sweet memories, transport you to your favorite time or even calm and soothe you.

Last Sunday, I was laying in bed with severe cramps, feeling crappy and barely able to move. I had just received the Indulge candle from Bethel & Co and decided to try it out. If I was going to be bound to my bed I might as well make the room smell good and comforting. That was the best decision I made that Sunday. The cramps were still there but the sweet mix of golden pears, sweet cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla made me feel warm and fuzzy inside. It brought joy to what seemed like an unbearable day and it transported me to the memories of cozy sweaters, beautiful color leaves and I could almost taste the deliciousness of sweet warm desserts. How things make me feel matters the most and this candle made me feel all the feels. I am truly in love, it also helps that the candle is aesthetically pleasing to the eyes which is incredibly satisfying. This was the perfect add on to my Sunday self care ritual: fall edition.

Why Bethel & Co? I try to be a conscious shopper. I care about who my money supports and how it helps the environment. Bethel & Co is a small female owned business. They hand pour each candle making sure they are made with love and precision. Their candles are made out of a blend of soy wax, natural essential oils and phthalate-free fragrance oils, making them non-toxic, environmentally friendly and vegan. When you receive their candles you can see and smell the hard work behind them, it feels personal and unique. Shopping from them makes me feel good and warm inside, just like their candles.

P.S. The Indulge candle is the perfect companion to my second fall recommendation: a good book.

Finding Your Own North Star:

Fall is the time in which we shed our old selves, we let go of the things that do not serve us making room for growth. I like to take this time to look within, analyze how I feel, I write the things that are and aren’t working in my life, I like to do some soul cleansing. Books personally help me with this process, they help guide me and open my mind. This book in particular has helped me put many things in perspective and cleared my vision even further. Finding Your Own North Star by Martha Beck is full knowledge and mental exercises. Most exercises will make you feel uncomfortable but they will help guide you to live your ideal life. This book teaches you how to read your internal compass as Beck calls it. It helps you understand why you’re unhappy at your job, relationships, etc. It is almost like sitting at therapy but instead of a human there’s a book staring back at you. I highly recommend everyone to read it, even if you feel you have your life figured out.

This is what fall is all about: a sweet smelling candle, a cozy blanket and a book that will help you be a better you.

Natura Culina Chamomile oil:

With the change from warm to cooler temperatures comes the change in skin from dewy to dry as well. I find joy in my skin care routines and it’s time to step up the game with some extra hydration. There are a million different skin care products out there but this chamomile oil is the only one I recommend over and over again. I’ve been a loyal customer for 3 years now. I have extremely sensitive skin and I break out easily with different products. I have combination skin in the summer and very dry skin in the winter. The chamomile oil is not only hydrating but it is also so gentle to my skin. I like to apply it before bed after using their chamomile face wash and I wake up in the morning with super soft, bright skin. Sometimes if I have small bumps before bed they will dramatically decrease or be gone by the morning with this face oil. It is truly magical and everyone should absolutely give this oil a try this fall, I promise your skin will thank you.

Why Natura Culina? As I mentioned earlier I’m very careful of who I support and where I spend my money. Natura Culina is a female owned business. All their products are 100% clean, in fact the chamomile face oil only contains 5 ingredients in which they are all certified organic: Jajoba Oil, Calendula Flower, Rosehip Seed oil, Chamomile and vitamin E. Their products aren’t mass produced, they are all handmade at their small studio in small batches and all their ingredients come from local and sustainable sources. Besides delivering an amazing product Natura Culina also cares about the environment, they are very conscious of their packaging and use items that are reusable, recyclable or biodegradable. This is the kind of business I feel happy and guilt free to spend my money on.

Zinc Supplement:

Let me start off by saying I’m not a doctor, I’m just a woman that does lots of research in order to better her health. Always make sure to check with your doctor before taking any supplements. With that said fall is synonymous to colds and the flu.  Did you know many natural cold and flu medicines and nasal sprays contain zinc? The reason being that zinc plays an extremely important part in our immune system. I first discovered the benefits of zinc when looking for anything that could help me with my period problems but later discovered how important it is for our health in general. Zinc is anti-inflammatory, helps with immune function, helps regulate stress response, promotes healthy ovulation, it is a natural androgen blocker, helps with all hormones including thyroid, helps with wound healing and so much more. Zinc is considered an essential nutrient, meaning that your body can’t produce or store it. For this reason, you must get a constant supply through your diet. I’ve been taking this supplement since July and I feel a difference with my body in a positive way. It’s time that we start taking care of ourselves from the inside out that’s why this supplement made it to this important list. Help your body fight colds and the flu this season the natural way. Feeling healthy brings me joy.

Why Pure Encapsulation? Not all vitamins and supplements are made equally. Unfortunately there are many supplements made with low quality, synthetic products. I did some research before buying and found this brand. They have great reviews and was recommended by multiple health experts. It is gluten-free, Non-GMO and hypoallergenic.

P.S. Always take Zinc with a meal, it can cause nausea with an empty stomach. Cheers to a healthy fall season.

Unbelievable on Netflix:

While you’re scrolling down Netflix trying to figure out what show to binge on this fall, this is the one you should choose. In fact, I think everyone should watch this. This short series is based on the true story of Marie Adler who was accused of lying about her rape. It is a difficult watch, that will bring you to tears on occasions and at other times make you feel full of anger and frustration. However, there is a tiny glimpse of hope at the end that there are still people out there full of empathy that want to do the right thing. There are so many things I want to say about it but I won’t spoil it for you, just watch.

P.S. As a victim of sexual assault this was an incredible difficult series to watch but I knew I could handle it. Be mindful that this can be extremely triggering for yourself or others.

May this season be full of letting go of old habits, new beginnings, healthy choices, mental healing and lots of self care.
